B33 Sicilian Defense Svehnikov Variation

1.e4 c5
This seems like the right choice. [Don considered 1...e6 & a French but, from what I've seen, he doesn't do well againt the Tarrasch (see Minkov - Carrelli : Checkmate Championship 2008, 1-0 in 17) & his opponent has struggled with the Sveshnikov (See Mangion - Patrucker : GSCL 2009).]

2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5 6.Ndb5 d6 7.Bg5
[7.Nd5 is a good alternative.]

7...a6 8.Na3 b5 9.Bxf6 gxf6 10.Nd5 f5 11.c3 fxe4?

[11...Bg7= when Black is ready to answer 12.Bxb5? axb5 13.Nxb5 with 13...0-0-/+ is right.]

12.Bxb5! axb5 13.Nxb5 Be6
Played after a lengthy pause. [Not 13...Bb7?? 14.Nbc7+ Kd7 15.Qg4+ & mate next.]

White resigns. Next week, Don will face Arthur Macaspac in an all-Armed Forces (Marines vs. Army) battle for 1st place. The winner will become the KCC's 6th Champion & join Rene Ray, who won in 1996, as the only non-Master to be crowned. See also Mike Goeller's story in the Kenilworthian, which has more extensive notes. 1-0
