Hi Mike:

Snow, of course, brings to mind the winter Olympics, and ice. And reading the New York Times on-line this afternoon I was intrigued by this piece on curling and its current fascination for the wall street set. See: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/26/business/26curling.html?hp

The reporter, Eric Dash, said that "Curling is like chess on ice, and that, Wall Streeters say, it part of its quiet appeal."

I have heard that analogy for decades. Watching some the other day, though, I could see the strategic elements in the game, but I don't think that makes it "chess on ice," really. There seemed a lot more skill than strategy, giving the stones just the right push and using the brushes to influence the speed and trajectory, etc. And I found it a little hard to get excited about it, though you'd think I'd be among those best situated to join curling's fan base.

Maybe if we literally played chess on ice during the Winter Olympics, we could get the sport added to the list of Olympic events. If chess itself does not have a bigger fan base than curling, then it does not deserve to be considered.
