Isolated Queen Pawn Guidelines

Here are some rules for both sides of the typical IQP / "isolani" position we discussed last week:

As White:

1) Avoid simplication if at all possible -- you are the attacker and endgames favor Black.

2) Set up the potential mating battery with Q to d3 and B to c2 (or b1).

3) Rooks belong on the E and D files -- NOT the C file!

4) Watch out for corresponding Knight squares -- if N at c6 moves try for Ne5, if N at f6 moves try for Ne4.

5) Play d4-d5 only when a concrete benefit is assured.

As Black:

1) In general, the opposite of the above!

2) When White sets up for the mating battery you MUST play g7-g6.

3) You take your cue from White's moves -- that is, there is no set formation to aim for -- you can win by simplication and defense to the attacking threats(overextension).

4) If White plays Nf3-e5 don't take it -- the pawn formation change after dxe5 is normally better for White.

5) Play the Q rook to c8 -- then possibly c7 and d7.

6) Q-side pawns are more solid on a7 and b6 than a6 and b5 (leaving a hole at c5).
